Our community will be attending the play, “Young Bear: The Story of Fracnes Slocum. This play is based upon the life of Frances Slocum, a young girl who is taken in the early 1800’s to live among Native Americans in the Mid-West. The play follows her personal journey through the different cultures and looks at each through the eyes of a young child. We will be leaving Cedars at 8:30 AM to allocate time to park, use restrooms before the 9:30 AM show.
Please visit the field trip link for your child to attend: http://goo.gl/forms/VJO9IMZkqQ
Last week the children made hummus and fruit pops in the kitchen. We used garbonza beans and pureed them in the food processor with dill from our garden. We seasoned the hummus with garlic and the children loved it! Many had said it was the best hummus they have ever had. The recipe is below if interested. This week in the kitchen we will be making cornbread and lemonade.
Parents, we are so appreciative of your support with supplying ingredients for the kitchen.
1 can of garbanzo beans, ½ lemon juiced, 4 garlic cloves, 4 sprigs of fresh dill
*Mix all ingredients in a food processor, serve with chips or naan
The children last week mixed colors and painted a Jackson Pollock for our classroom. The colors on the canvas are beautiful and everyone created their hue before splattering it on the canvas as they walked around, rotating and adding color. We look forward to hanging it in our community.
The end cycles had a wonderful trip to Pedernales State Falls Park. The children had fun hiking, swimming and making campfire meals. We especially enjoyed the variety of nature available for us to see as we walked on the trials, lots of flowers and plants. Also, the children enjoyed viewing and hiking the Pedernales Falls, looking at the different sizes of rocks and climbing them. We also hiked the trail which lead us to Twin Falls and observed a wonderful pool of water below.
This week in our community we have a group of children headed to the Science Mill as part of a going-out to experience hands-on activities relating to various areas of science. We also have a group planning a visit to the capital and wildflower center before the end of the year. A group of children have organized a talent show the last week of May. The show will be on Tuesday, May 24th from 3:00 – 3:30 PM in Mountain Laurel Cottage. We will be serving smoothies and sun butter balls. We will share a flyer to go home tomorrow with more information about the talent show. Parents are welcomed to come and watch the talent show that day in our community. If your child has props he/she can keep it at school in a bag if needed as we will have a few practice rehearsals.
We will be studying the periodic table of elements this week and learning about atoms and elements. We will also be reading and learning more about Africa, specifically animals. Last week we looked at the animals and plants which make up the rainforest and will do a compare/contrast to the climate of Africa. Also, we will be making “city scapes” with Van Gogh skylines. We also made a Jackson Pollock for our community last week and finished it just recently. The children loved making it!
Our community will be having a “Field Day” next Friday in the morning from 9-11 AM> We will have an obstacle course set up and the children will do relays with a greased watermelon. We will do a few other activities as well, which the children have planned, such as an egg race, balloon toss and of course a three legged race. Last year we had such a wonderful experience with Field Day that the children wanted to continue the end of year tradition.
We will have ice-cream sundaes afterwards! ☺
Lastly, next Friday is a half day and all children need to bring a snack and their lunch. We will have a picnic lunch outside on the lawn after “Field Day” altogether before departure at 12:30 PM.
Parents, please let us know if you have any question or concerns and have a lovely week!
