![]() This week in Mountain Laurel Cottage… Our community is excited to announce that we will be attending the ballet in December. We have purchased tickets to see the Act II performance of The Nutcracker at the Long Center on Tuesday, December 8th from 12:00-1:00 PM. Fig Tree will be joining us this year to see the performance as well. Due to limited seats this year, we will not be having drivers attend the ballet. You may purchase tickets through the box office for weekend availability. However, our community will need support with drivers to and from the ballet. Let us know if you are available by emailing mountainlaurel@cedarsmontessori.com. Please include the number of children you can take in your vehicle. Also please note in your email if you can only drive one-way (leaving Cedars or picking-up at the Long Center). Or if you have availability to drive both-ways. Departure from Cedars Montessori: 10:45-11:00 AM Departure from the Long Center: 1:00-1:15 PM (pick-up along entrance loop) We will reply to your email by Wednesday to confirm your support! ☺ This week in the kitchen we will be making whole wheat strawberry muffins and Rainbow Veggie Wraps. The children are excited to make the muffins using healthy ingredients such as honey for sweetener. The Rainbow wraps include a variety of colorful vegetables such as cucumber, cabbage, carrots, yellow squash and red pepper with a light layer of cream cheese and chives on the tortilla wrap prior to folding and rolling. Finally, thank you for all of your contributions to our garden. The children got everything planted this past week. We have a variety of vegetables and herbs to care for throughout the year. The children added the flowering plants to our butterfly garden after laying mulch. We will continue to water and observe the plant’s cycle in creating food for harvest when ready. This week we’ll make plant markers using rocks and “I’ve been watered blocks,” to ensure measured water. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns this week! Warmly, Mountain Laurel Cottage

What’s happening in Mountain Laurel Cottage...
Our community would like to thank everyone for providing flowers and edible plants for our garden. The children have been working in the garden all week and began the process of planting on Friday. The children collected soil and compost from the trailer bed using shovels and wheel barrels. It was exciting for the children to learn how to use a wheel barrel and communicate when support was needed. Everyone learned how to do square gardening with Ms. Rhonda to determine how much space each specific plant needs to reach maximum growth. A few children sketched our 6 beds to illustrate which plants were going where. We will begin work on our butterfly garden this week with weeding and adding more soil. We are still accepting plants this week if anyone is interested in donating that hasn’t already. Please refer to the plant list below for more information. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NPsNsYPB3HqMM5NVn32FqiCTaMsFE9Ct0Cih6sZZWK4/pub As we approach a cooler season, please have your child keep a rain coat or poncho at school. We do attend recess at the playground or clearing if it is a light sprinkle. In case the weather changes and begins to rain we continue our time indoors. The children also need a rain coat or poncho for nature walks. If your child is interested in learning how to crochet or knit, please provide yarn, small scissors, needles and a hook. These items are kept in the child’s hand work basket in the classroom. The children will begin learning more skills this week by making appointments with other children who are presenting these lessons. This past week in the kitchen, the children made smoothies and bruschetta. The smoothies were delicious and the children loved the bruschetta. We have a variety of spices in our kitchen we can use. The children enjoyed smelling the various kinds prior to sprinkling the bruschetta with an oregano spice. This week in the kitchen, the children are making deviled eggs and banana oatmeal bread bites. The children have been enjoying the Tone Bar material in our community. Many have been composing songs by ear and note patterns. We will begin using the staff paper and composing our music with notes using the Major C Scale. We will explore various scales throughout the week using our Song Book. Songs the children are singing together include Flea and Fish and Chips. We will continue to introduce a new song each week. This week we will be learning “Drill Ye Terriers Drill”. Parents please visit the school website and parent connection page to join our community in providing kitchen ingredients, flowers or supporting with laundry. Our community will begin preparing the garden by weeding and turning the soil. We will be adding new soil and compost to our beds prior to planting this week. The children are eager to begin gardening and look forward to the process of caring for the plants and then harvesting when ready. Please have your child bring 1 flower and 2 organic edible plants for our garden by Wednesday, September 16th. Please refer to the link below for ideas of what to provide to our community garden. We appreciate your help so much! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NPsNsYPB3HqMM5NVn32FqiCTaMsFE9Ct0Cih6sZZWK4/pub This week in our community a few children have started passports for going-outs to support their research or community needs. A group of children are headed to the retirement home, Stonebridge to serve the elderly with entertaining board games such as Monopoly and Sorry. We have a second group going to the pet store to determine the budget of specific animals surveyed and graphed to be added to our community. The children will record and budget the costs for specific animals prior to expensing them to our community. We look forward to having an animal join our community. This past week we made basil lemonade and cornbread in the kitchen. The children loved squeezing the lemons and mincing the basil. We had two children do fractions while making the cornbread to ensure that measuring the ingredients by ¼ 2x vs. ½ once to share responsibilities. This week the children will be making strawberry banana smoothies and mozzarella, basil and oregano bruschetta. The children are enjoying cooking in the kitchen and serving our community with a variety of snacks. As the weather changes, please have your child bring a pair of rain boots and jacket to be kept at the school for rainy days. We do go to the playground if it is a light sprinkle and nature walks as well. In the past we have enjoyed water hikes, walking through the puddles and seeing the sediment and erosion carried when water travels. There are many lessons about weather in particular to experience.
