This week in Mountain Laurel Cottage…
The children had a wonderful time viewing the performance, “The Nutcracker.” The children loved the costumes and music, but were in awe as Mother Ginger appeared, and all of the bon-bons dancing with her. It was a chilly day, but great fun at the theatre. Thank you to all of our drivers for assisting with transportation to and from the theatre. A group of carolers (13) sang songs at Stonebridge Community Health Center last Friday. The residents there enjoyed their songs and performance so much. The group of children walked up and down the hallways singing, and performed in the cafeteria, but also sang to the residents in the Alzheimer’s unit, which was such a gift. The group of carolers are planning a trip to the hospital to sing songs as well before the holidays, or after. They shared a song with each community yesterday afternoon. This week we will begin making scarves once again for the Austin's Shelter for Women and Children (ASWC) and the Emergency Shelter (Downtown). Last year we made 60 scarves as a community, and the occupants at the shelters were so grateful for the beautiful handmade scarves donated. The children cut the fleece according to a specific length, whether it's a scarf for an adult or child. Then they fold the fleece and sew pockets with embellishments, or cut-notch and tie to make pockets. We need 6 yards donated this week (if available); any color or pattern. You may purchase yards of fleece from Michaels, Jo-Anns and/or Wal-mart. Please let us know if you are available to donate and/or have questions by sending an email, and thank you for your support! Please stop by our classroom as the children have made ornaments to support the local organization Tree Folks. The ornaments will be on sale from this week only. The suggested donation is $2. All proceeds will be given to Tree Folks, which is a non-profit organization that promotes the renewal, restoration and care of urban forests. The ornaments are displayed on the aftercare building wall across from our community. Please choose one ornament ($2) per child, so that each family is able to participate. "Squirrel and Meatball," will be featured at the stage this afternoon. This play is written and directed by two individuals within our community. The performance will be from 3:00-3:30 PM. Donations ($2) will go towards raising more money needed for a pet, and half of the donations will go to Austin Pet's Alive; as a Holiday treat. Also, our community will be hosting a "Winter Gathering" on Thursday, December 15th from 3:00-3:45 PM. We will be sharing holiday songs and poems with you all as a celebration before the New Year begins. We look forward to you joining us and being a part of this wonderful performance. Afterwards, hot cocoa, "winter" sugar cookies, and gluten-free cookies will be served and available. We hope to see you there! Finally, the elementary is having a community potluck on Thursday, December 15th starting at 5 PM at the clearing. Bring a dish (6-8 servings) and your camping chair, blanket, flashlight and instruments to enjoy a winter campfire with other Cedars families. Families have a wonderful and safe holiday; we look forward to your return January 4th!

This Week in Mountain Laurel Cottage…
We will be traveling to the Long Center on Thursday, December 8th to attend Ballet Austin, “The Nutcracker.” We will be leaving campus at 11:00 AM and will return to campus at 1:30 PM. We will be seeing Act II. This week we will read, “The Nutcracker,” and learn more about Tchaikovsky, the composer. Prior to attending the ballet, we will have an early morning lunch and/or snack. As a reminder, please have your child at morning arrival carry his/her car seat and/or booster to the porch. Parents of children without a required car seat and/or booster will be contacted to ensure safe transportation to/from the ballet. We will be making skillet cornbread in the cast iron this week. The children made gluten-free vanilla cupcakes last week, and were inspired to make original cornbread. We will also be making winter apple crisp and hummus this week as well in the kitchen. The children made hot cocoa last week in the kitchen when the temperature dropped to 50F, and enjoyed it very much. If your family would like to donate hot cocoa to our community please let us know, and we will provide the recommended brand to purchase. Also, many of the children have been enjoying stove-top tea all week with this cooler weather. A few children from the community have written and organized songs for caroling at Cedars. The group of children will be caroling this week at Stonebridge Center as well. They’ve practiced daily at the stage 6 songs; including 12 days of Christmas, Jingle Bells and Silver Bells. The group will carol on campus next week, singing a song to each community. We are in need of drivers for this outing – if you are available on Friday, Dec 9th from 9:00-11:00 AM, please let us know by sending an email to the community. Also, there is a group of children that are performing a play next week on Tuesday, December 13th from 3:00-3:30 PM, “Squirrel and Meatball.” Families are welcome to join us for a story about the journey and life of a squirrel and meatball. The group of children performing would like to raise (more) money for a community pet and give the remaining funds to Austin Pets Alive as a gift for the holidays. Tickets are $2 per person. Lastly, the children started to plan and prepare for the Winter Gathering, which will be on Thursday, December 15th from 3:00-3:45 PM in Mountain Laurel. Come listen to the children sing holiday songs and/or recite poems. This is a wonderful time to celebrate altogether the end of the year and upcoming holiday. There will be hot cocoa available. Finally, the elementary will be having a community potluck on Thursday, December 15th starting at 5 PM at the clearing. Bring a dish (6-8 servings) and your camping chair, blanket, flashlight and instruments to enjoy a winter campfire with other Cedars families. Have a lovely week, Mountain Laurel Cottage ☺ |
