This week in Mountain Laurel Cottage…
Our community enjoyed visiting June’s Family Farm, Pure Luck on Monday. It was a beautiful day to tour the farm and be amongst the wonderful goats in the pasture. All of the children loved standing and petting the goats while touring the farm outside. We learned about and discussed the difference between a milking, meat and fiber goat. The children had the opportunity to see how a goat is milked and filtered before consumption. Many of the children got to experience milking the goat and trying its milk after filtration.
The children then toured where the goats get milked in the barn and where the cheese is made before distributing to the stores. Our community was fascinated with the logistics of the barn to see how the goats entered, were fed grain from the bin and then milked. We had a lovely picnic lunch on the lawn outside, eating crackers and cheese from the farm owners Amelia and Ben. The children tasted the cheese “June’s Joy,” which was a delicious treat! Afterwards we walked to visit another part of the farm where herbs are grown in hoop houses. Before leaving the children gave a few hugs to the family farm dogs which accompanied us on the tour. We had a wonderful time on the farm with June and his family Amelia and Ben.
Last week our community had our class elections. The children campaigned creating posters, a speech and stickers for the following positions. We had an official ballot where children voted individually for a person for each position. Then we had two witnesses do the count per position to ensure accuracy. We had an even tie this year with the position of Vice President – which hasn’t happened before. The two agreed to hold the position as co-vice presidents. All of these positions support our community on Thursdays with handling any concerns or questions that come up day-to-day. We have a community box in our class that creates the agenda for these meetings hosted on Thursdays. The children then use the white board to list the new topics. Then all ideas are shared before voting on an agreement.
The following children are leading our community this fall before our next election which will be open to all other members in January.
President – Kalen Jackson
Vice Presidents – Harper Herde and Annabelle Smith
Peace Keeper – Phoenix Kelly
Governor – Aidan Domo
Last week in the kitchen the children made Pumpkin Bread, Waldorf (Vegetable and Fruit) Salad and Roasted Parsnips. All of the recipes were delicious. The children loved the roasted Parsnips the most and it made the classroom smell wonderful. We had a few participate on a going-out to H-E-B to get groceries to make smoothies as well. These children made strawberry banana smoothies; more vitamin C is what they wanted to add. This week we will be making “Pumpkin Sunflower Bread” and “Bruschetta with Pear, Honey and Gorgonzola.”
Lastly, conferences are coming up on Friday, November 6th and Monday, November 9th. Please visit the link below if you haven’t already to sign-up for a conference.
Warmly, Mountain Laurel Cottage ☺
