This week in Mountain Laurel Cottage…
Parents, our community will be attending The Nutcracker Tuesday, December 8th from 12-1 PM. Please return your child’s envelope to school with $5 enclosed. We would like to collect all payments before the end of the week. Thank you to all the parents that responded to drive our children to the ballet. We have enough drivers for this Field Trip and will let you know further details of our outing when the time comes near. We will be having a Docent visit our community in December to share with us the history of the Ballet in Austin, the story of the Nutcracker and etiquette in the theatre. Let us know if you have any questions about this Field Trip in December.
This past week we have been learning about the Constitution and the Former Presidents and First Ladies of the United States. There is a group of children in our community that would like to host a Presidential Reenactment in three weeks. These children are organizing the living museum of Former Presidents and First Ladies. The children are writing scripts and illustrating portraits. There will be an invitation sent out next week for parents to attend the event which will occur at the end of October. Please let us know if you have any questions or would like more information.
Our community will be studying Native Americans this week, learning about their traditions and customs. The children have been discussing Native Americans in the Southwest from a book presented in our classroom. We will talk about how to make a wampum bracelet, construction of a tee-pee and bow and arrow. The children are fascinated with the foods eaten and housing constructed. We will explore the movement and sounds too.
Last week in the kitchen, the children made veggie wraps. This week we will be making strawberry wheat muffins, pineapple coconut smoothies and oatmeal bites. The children have been preparing the recipes in groups of 2-3 children. They are enjoying using the measuring cups and measuring spoons, as well communicating which ingredient is listed next in the recipes instructions. The children are planning the recipes for each week by looking for recipes in our community cookbook and other cookbooks provided. Parents, thank you for providing ingredients for our kitchen on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We appreciate all of your support with these delicious recipes made by the children.
*We are excited to begin our grocery outings to get ingredients for cooking on Mondays and Wednesdays. The children are planning the recipes and lists by shopping for 5 ingredients or less. We look forward to having the children make food every day, except Friday during the week! ☺
We will be planning a few outings this week to support our community in the kitchen, garden and to supplement research. The children are enjoying using our “Passport Booklet” to get them started in finding more information about a study, research, materials or food for our community. The “Passport Booklet” allows the child to plan the outing, prepare the trip with directions, what to do when calling the driver and making a list of questions and items needed. A few going-outs have already occurred since school has started. Some of these outings include a trip to the zoo to support a cat research, picking up doughnuts from Donut Taco Palace to provide a tasting from a presentation of Farmer-to-Consumer, all about wheat, a visit to a Circle C Dentist to get information on teeth and crowns and lastly visits to Petsmart to budget an animal for our community.
These going-outs support the child with their work and provide a wonderful experience to gain more independence with managing time and money along with interacting with others within our society to support their need. Let us know if you would like to drive for a going-out by sending us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
*Parents we will send a going-out permission form via email 2-4 days before an outing will occur.
Have a lovely week, Mountain Laurel Cottage ☺
