Hello All. I wanted to take a minute to let you all know what is going in our sweet environment. As always, there is learning of math, reading of letters and all the other good stuff you all love to hear about. However, that isn't why you are "here". You are at Cedars Montessori School for the education of the senses, the fostering of love and above all else, the growth of The Cosmic Child.
That term may be new to some of you. It was to me when I first started so, so many years ago. The Cosmic Child is your child as they learn about the World around them in a way different from anything you can imagine. It's the What, When, Where, Who and Why of educating the children about the World. Maria Montessori believed that Cosmic Education was a “unifying global and universal view[s] of the past, present and future.” She so wisely believed that children wanted and needed to learn about the world around them. That by educating young children about what is real, what was real and what we can learn from the past to take with us into the future. Timeless, isn't it? This month, we have begun a study of our Cosmos. Beginning with what is real and in front of us. With group lessons on classification such as "living/non-living" "plant/animal" "air/land/water", we are beginning the conversation about "What is this and why is it important to me?" From there, we have gone to the study of animals and classification of the vertebrates. This is done in such a way that everyone takes something away from the lesson. Whether it be just the words such as "mammal" or vertebrate, or maybe a child is labeling the parts of the mammal, or perhaps doing research on a specific mammal that they are interested in. We learn about the continents, the countries, their flags and much more. More recently, we have started discussing the Universe. The planets, the asteroid belt, the moon and plenty more. They have great questions and theories, as I'm sure you can imagine. We start from our classroom, and move out. "Where are we?" I ask the class. The answers I get are great. The correct answer that we discuss is that I am "Ms. Jessica, sitting on the rug in the Rabbit Run Classroom, at Cedar's Montessori School, in Austin, in the state of Texas, in the country of The United States of America, on the continent of North America, on the Planet Earth in the Milky Way. The idea is to start the discussion. To prompt an awareness of a bigger and greater responsibility than to just ourselves. To invite the questions that are hard to answer in hopes of laying the foundation to an understanding of The Greater Good. We do big things here. Let me know when you want to observe and watch the magic for yourselves. As always, Kelly and I thank you for your trust and support. Peace and Love, Jessica
