Hello all,
Happy fall! Nice to feel the weather change finally! Coming up on the schedule is the Silent Journey. We hope you'll make it! Silent Journey is really the best way to learn more about Montessori education and how it works at Cedars. You'll get a chance to see the progression of the prepared environment from primary through upper elementary, and work with the materials that your child will use. Silent Journey is a campus wide adults only event on October 13, 5-8pm. Other goings on in the Roadrunner community: -Ms. Lacey has been bringing groups of students to the garden daily. They are loving learning about plants and getting to work in the garden! -One of our favorite games continues to be "I Spy", mostly for the youngest members of our community. We lay out objects from the language shelf on the rug and play I spy with beginning sounds "I spy something that begins with /s/, sailboat!" The reason we play is to get really skilled at hearing beginning sounds in words, before we move to learning to listen to each individual sound in a word. -Each day we are doing our calendar and practicing saying the date "today is Wednesday, September 28, 2022." -One favorite grace and courtesy this month was how to teach someone to pronounce your name correctly. We also have been learning about syllables by using our names. In the beginning of the year our bookshelf is stocked with books that celebrate differences in people and families. One book we read often is All the Colors We Are: The Story of How We Get Our Skin Color. It has some great information on the three ways we get our skin color, melanin, the sun, and our ancestors. The children love to know why things are the way that they are. By giving them this factual information right from the start, we can foster a community that is curious about and celebrates differences among us. We will expand this lesson by talking about where our ancestors come from and putting pins on a map! We will be opening our gathering up for Show and Tell on Fridays! We invite children to bring something interesting from home, something found on a nature walk, art, books, or photos are all welcome. Please leave toys, stuffed animals, and anything character related at home. If you have a question about anything, please let me know! Warmly, Melissa
