Welcome to the home stretch!
The Rockwood community is buzzing with activity and excitement in these final weeks of the school year. Children have been organizing, planning, and creating so many big things! Here’s a little peek into the goings-on: Students are planning our first ever piano recital, making goat cheese, baking monkey bread, creating crystals from supersaturated solutions, constructing a large-scale model of the Great Wall of China, presenting a trifold layout of the three branches of the US government, running a coffee shop, dehydrating herbs grown in the garden for tea, building a model of a cat's skeleton and anatomy, making homemade Kale chips, baking chocolate babka from scratch, transforming existing creative writing into comics, painting watercolor cards of anxiety-reducing mantras, creating art for a silent auction for charity, caring for guinea pigs, measuring the tire swing to practice the area of a circle, classifying monocots vs dicots, writing poems to honor our fish Ritan, learning about the economic interconnectedness of human beings (“Who relies on the farmer?”), mastering math facts, determining cold blooded and warm blooded animals, classifying different kinds of succulent fruit, and preparing for graduation! That’s a lot of Big Work! That’s children owning their education and constructing themselves! ✨ Teri’s Corner Just looking around the room there are so many things happening that at the start of the 2021-2022 school year I wouldn't have believed possible to be happening in one classroom, let alone it happening with productivity and not chaos! Seeing is believing! The freedom to choose, the challenge to match their responsibility with their choices, the space, resources, and time to figure it out, the trust to ask for help when they need it (from 5 friends… and then me or Paige!) and the motivation to keep going. These children are inquisitive learners! I am so excited to see what next year brings. Upcoming Firefly Cafe will be closed the final week of school, starting May 22. Look for the grand re-opening when school resumes! Commencement! Join us on Thursday, May 25 at 2:00 in Rockwood to honor our graduates and to pass on the light of leadership to our rising Full Cycles. 💕 Last day of school is Friday, May 26! It’s an early dismissal…pickup is at 12:00. Head over to the playground afterward to celebrate! (info below) End of the Year Celebration: Please join us at 12:15 to celebrate on the Elementary Playground! BYOE: Bring your own EVERYTHING! Blankets, food, (chairs if you'd like), sunscreen, beverages of your choice, and whatever else your family may need. Remember to "leave no trace," pack up all your belongings, and leave our campus beautiful. Share in community one last time this school year! Suggestion Box Summer is a time for climbing trees, learning to swim, and riding bikes. Let their “summer homework” be practicing new skills, being in nature, having those sleepovers (we’re still in a Covid deficit!), and learning how to be bored. Let your child help cook and serve a meal, give them practice using money and getting change, have them talk to the server at the restaurant and order for the table, watch them run a lemonade stand themselves, have them help plan a trip (they can read the map, figure out the train schedule, or find the airport gate!). Learn a new language, research how to care for that pet they’re asking for, see a play. This is the work of childhood. Have a great summer!
